On June 20, 2017 at approximately 6:00 PM the Franklin Township Police Department received at 9-1-1 call reporting a car with a fuel leak in the area of Millstone Road and Somerset Street. Upon arrival officers found a 2016 Audi Q5 with a ruptured fuel tank. It appears that the driver of the vehicle was backing out of a parking spot of a business on Somerset Street when she struck a pole that was sticking approximately 6 inches out of the ground. This caused the puncture in her tank. She advised that she had filled her tank earlier in the day with approximately 20 gallons of gasoline.
Responders from East Franklin Volunteer Fire, Community Volunteer Fire, New Brunswick Fire Department, Elizabeth Avenue Haz-Mat, Somerset County Haz-Mat and Middlesex County Haz-Mat were on the scene. It was determined that the majority of the fuel made its way into a storm drain that was in the area. The Franklin Township Sewerage Authority and Department of Public Works were also on location. The drains were flushed to mitigate the fuel contamination.
No charges have been filed at this time.
