Fatal Structure Fire

Post Date:08/14/2017 4:30 PM
Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department and Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office in conjunction with the Franklin Township Office of Fire Prevention are conducting an investigation into a structure fire that occurred on Gregory Lane in the Franklin Park section of the Township.

At 9:31 PM on August 13, 2017 the Franklin Township Police Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a structure fire on Gregory Lane.  Upon arrival, patrol units observed heavy smoke and flames come from the residence.  Multiple neighbors stated that they believed that the resident was still in the condominium.  Officers attempted to make entry but were unable to because of the smoke and flames.  Firefighters from Franklin Park, Middlebush, Griggstown, Little Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill, Community, Somerset Fire and Rescue, North Brunswick and Kendall Park responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.  Emergency Medical Personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Kendall Park First Aid Squad were also on scene.

Once the fire was extinguished firefighters were able to make entry and located Maria Cisyk, 73, of Gregory Lane deceased in the residence.  An autopsy was conducted by the New Jersey State Regional Medical Examiner’s Office in Newark.  The preliminary findings indicated that Ms. Cisyk’s death was accidental and caused by smoke inhalation.

The initial investigation revealed that the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature and appears to have started in the kitchen area.  Four additional condominiums suffered fire, smoke and water damage and were deemed uninhabitable.  The residents from those units were displaced and are staying in the area with family or friends.
