Post Date:02/01/2018 1:30 PM
On January 31, 2018 at 4:53 PM the Franklin Township Police Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a serious motor vehicle crash in the area of 49 Veronica Avenue.  Upon arrival officers found a two car crash in the roadway.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2004 Toyota Camry operated by Richard Manzo, 91 years old of Somerset, was exiting from the driveway of 49 Churchill Avenue when it collided with a 2015 Jeep Wrangler that was travelling southbound on Veronica Avenue.  The Wrangler was operated by Nabil A. Said, 45 years old of Hillsboro.   When officers arrived on scene they found the Toyota with heavy driver’s side damage.  Mr. Manzo was entrapped within the vehicle and suffering from chest and hip injuries.  Firefighters responded to the scene to extricate him.  The passenger of the Camry, Catherine Manzo – 91 years old of Somerset, was found unconscious and unresponsive.  Officers extricated her from the vehicle and began to perform lifesaving efforts.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Manzo were transported to a local trauma center by EMS personnel.  Mrs. Manzo was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.  The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy is conducted by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.  Mr. Said and his 2 juvenile passengers refused medical assistance at the scene.

The Franklin Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.  Veronica Avenue was closed for several hours during the investigation and subsequent clean up.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Officer James Raics of the Franklin Township Police Department at 732-873-5533 extension 3177.
