Scam-Alert

We want to alert our residents to a scam that has occurred in the area.  A resident of the Township received a call from the Franklin Police non-emergency number (732-873-5533).  The individual identified himself as an “officer“ and advised the resident that there was a problem with his immigration status.  The “officer” then instructed the individual to purchase approximately $10,000 in gift cards and provide him with the numbers to rectify his immigration issues.

THIS IS A SCAM!!!!

Today’s technology allows individuals to “spoof” a number to make it appear that it is coming from a legitimate source when its not.  The Franklin Township Police Department and Franklin Township PBA will NEVER solicit money over the phone.  Additionally, officers from the Franklin Township Police Department WILL NOT contact you regarding your immigration status.  Lastly, fines and penalties CANNOT be resolved with gift cards.

If you receive a call and hear any one of these warning clues, hang up immediately.  NEVER provide any personal information to ANYONE over the phone, especially on an unsolicited call.  If you receive a call from an officer and you question its validity, ask them to spell their name and provide you with their extension.  You can then contact 732-873-2300 and ask to be transferred to that officer.  Following these simple steps will help protect you from these high-tech criminals.
