Join the Shade Tree Commission, dignitaries, and representatives of the Franklin High School Green Team, for the Franklin Township Arbor Day Event, on Saturday, April 29th from 1:00PM to 3:00PM at Franklin High School, 500 Elizabeth Avenue, Somerset NJ
Our program includes reading of the 2023 Arbor Day Proclamation, ceremonial tree planting in front of the school, and informational displays. The Township’s bucket truck will also be on display at the event. The truck, partially purchased by the Shade Tree Fund, is used to maintain trees throughout the Township’s open spaces, parks, and rights-of-way. Township Department of Public Works personnel have been trained in safe and efficient tree pruning and removal techniques and operation of the bucket truck.
Tree-planting guidelines are available on the Shade Tree Commission’s Resources Page at franklintwpnj.org/ShadeTree.
Franklin Township is proudly entering its 21st year as a Tree City USA community joining more than 3,400 communities nationwide that have made the commitment to become a Tree City USA. To achieve Tree City status, communities must meet four standards of sound urban forestry management. They must maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on community forestry, and celebrate Arbor Day.
About the Shade Tree Commission
The Franklin Township Shade Tree Commission promotes the conservation and stewardship of trees throughout the Township by advising township officials regarding planting, care and maintenance of trees on township-owned lands. The Commission assists Franklin Township residents by increasing awareness of the benefits of arboriculture and providing advice and information regarding the selection, planting and care of trees. Trees reduce heating and cooling costs, moderate temperatures, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, help manage stormwater, promote a healthy environment, provide habitat for wildlife, add value to our homes, and enhance the appearance of neighborhoods, parks and communities.
