FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP FLOOD INFORMATION

WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREPARE?

 

Franklin Township has a number of flooding sources such as the Millstone River, Raritan River, Six Mile Run and the Delaware & Raritan Canal, Ten Mile Run, Nine Mile Run, Carter’s Brook, Simonson Brook, Cedar Grove Brook, Seeley’s Brook, and Randolph Brook. Street flooding can occur whenever storm drains become either clogged or over capacity. Properties that aren’t normally prone to flooding can be affected due to frozen soils, saturated soils, storm duration, and storm intensity. With so many sources and causes of flooding, it is important for you and your family to be prepared for the next time it floods, because it will flood again.

 

CHECK YOUR FLOOD VULNERABILITY: NJFloodMapper

  • Log onto www.floodsmart.gov to get a general rating of your flood risk.
  • Log onto www.msc.fema.gov to view Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) that show which areas are included in the 1% annual chance (100-year) flood zone.
  • Click on this link to see an overall map of Special Flood Hazard Areas (100-year flood zone) in the Township
  • Either come into the Engineering Department in Town Hall or call (732) 873-2500, extension 6230. We are open 7:30 to 4:30, Monday through Friday. There is no charge for general inquiries. A signed certificate detailing the FIRM information is available for a fifteen ($15.00) dollar fee.

GET PROTECTED:

  • Once you determine your risk, check into obtaining flood insurance for your home. A list of local insurance agents can be obtained at www.floodsmart.gov. Franklin Township participates in FEMA’s Community Rating System program at a Class 7 level which means a 15% discount for all policy holders in the Special Flood Hazard Area.
Prepare your family’s emergency kit and disaster plan. Keep medical supplies, batteries, food and water handy in case you need to evacuate in a hurry.
