Pedestrian safety:
Together we can prevent crashes involving pedestrians by teaching and practicing good pedestrian safety habits.
As a pedestrian you must:
-
Never leave a curb or place of safety when a driver is so close it is impossible for the driver to stop or yield
-
Cross at intersections only. The intersection is where drivers expect to see you.
-
Although pedestrians have the right of way, pedestrians must yield to drivers when crossing outside of an marked or unmarked crosswalk.
-
Always walk on a sidewalk where they are provided and accessible. In areas with no sidewalk, walk as far off the roadway as possible. Remember to walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
-
Never cross a highway where there is a median or barrier, except where there are marked crossings.
-
Never cross from in-between parked cars. Many pedestrians are killed or injured in non-intersection accidents when they run into the roadway from between parked cars.
-
When walking at night or early morning, be sure to wear light colored or reflective clothing. Be seen and be alert.
Pedestrians risk $54 fine and community service if they fail to yield the right of way to motorists anywhere except at crosswalks.
