REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERING INTO A CIVIL UNION:
- Not be a party of another civil union, domestic partnership or marriage in state or that is recognized by this state
- Be of the same sex
- Be at least 18 years of age
Same sex couples currently registered in a domestic partnership in New Jersey may enter into a civil union with the same partner and such entry into a civil union will terminate the previous domestic partnership.
WHO SHOULD APPLY IN FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP:
Applicants (at least one) who reside in Franklin Township. If neither applicant is a NJ resident, submit the application in the municipality where the ceremony is taking place
WHERE TO APPLY:
The Franklin Township Clerk’s Office, 475 DeMott Lane, Somerset
ALL APPLICATIONS ARE DONE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY:
Office hours Monday thru Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The last appointment is 3pm.
PERSONS REQUIRED TO BE PRESENT AT TIME OF APPLICATION:
Both applicants & 1 witness, who is 18 years of age or older
ITEMS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION – ALL DOCUMENTS MUST BE IN ENGLISH:
- Driver’s license, passport or state/federal I.D.
- Proof of residency only if a NJ resident
- Social Security number
- $28.00 payable in exact cash, check or money order
Please make sure applicant has a valid id with current address on it. If presenting a passport and utility bill, make sure the names match, including middle names.
WHEN TO COME IN AND WAITING PERIOD, AFTER FILLING OUT THE APPLICATION:
The recommendation is to come in at least two weeks before the ceremony. There is a mandated 72-hour waiting period from the time of application. (Remember, we are closed on weekends, which means you must apply by Tuesday in order to pick up the license on Friday for Friday night, Saturday or Sunday ceremony). The license is good for 30 days from the date of pick up.

Bring a certified copy of your existing civil union certificate. No waiting period required. Please call if you have any questions.
