PUBLIC SAFETY CADET UNIT #1808

The Cadet Program mentors young adults to serve their community by providing knowledge, skills, and practical experiences through education and training delivered by public safety professionals that build character, physical fitness and respect for the rule of law.

Membership is open to young adults 14-20 years of age, who are interested in a career in law enforcement or other public safety professions. Must be accepted into the continuous program prior to 18th birthday.

Application Deadline: October 17, 2024

2024 Program begins: October 24, 2024

Commitment is for every other Thursday until the end of the school year.

Program starts at 2:30 pm for Franklin HS students; 3:00 pm for students that attend other schools and ends at 5:00 pm.

The application and entrance essay is to be completed by the applicant only. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

What is needed for a complete application:

  1. Copy of your most recent school report card and/or your most recent school transcript
  2. Copy of your birth certificate
  3. G.P.A. of 2.0
  4. 14 years of age (having completed 8th grade) but no older than 17 at the time of acceptance
  5. Confidential background information sheet must be completed by an individual of your choice who is over the age of 18 and does not reside in your home
  6. If you are currently employed, the employment record is to be filled out by a representative of your employer.

Purpose of this program:
The Franklin Township Police Department Public Safety Cadet Unit is designed to provide exciting and challenging training, along with on-the-job experience for young people interested in a career in law enforcement. Cadets participate in classroom learning, practical scenario training, and are able to participate in ride-alongs with officers. Cadets work side by side with police officers, serving at various community events. The Cadet program is an excellent way to become familiar with law enforcement policies and procedures, to network with Police Officers, and to obtain community service hours.
Requirements:
-Be 14 (graduated from 8th grade) to 20 years of age to participate.
-Must be admitted into the program prior to your 18th birthday.
-Maintain at least a "C" average in all school work through 12th grade.
-Pass a background investigation. (criminal/motor vehicle record).
-Complete an oral interview.
-Maintain good moral and ethical character.
-Be able to attend TWO Cadet meetings per month and volunteer at township events.
-A uniform is required.  Shirt, cap, and safety vest will be supplied by the Franklin Township Police Department.  All cadets are responsible for having black pants (no sweatpants) and black shoes.

What we are not:
The Franklin Township Police Public Safety Cadet Unit is NOT a program for “troubled youth”. An applicant cannot have any arrests, convictions, or behavioral problems.
