Quick Facts
Natural gas is a dirty fossil fuel
- In 2014, natural gas-fired electric generation plants in New Jersey emitted 15 million of tons of CO2 (an increase of 17%).
- Existing gas pipelines in New Jersey release significant amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the air.
The facts about gas pipelines
- Half of all pipeline accidents occur on private property, and 93% of pipeline accidents result from “natural force damage” that is outside of the pipeline companies’ control.
- These accidents caused $42 million in damages from 2010 to 2014.
- 21% of accidents result in injuries; 7% result in fatalities
- Compressor stations regularly emit toxic VOCs, particulates, and radioactive materials such as benzene, lead, radon, and formaldehyde -known carcinogens that result in disease such as respiratory conditions, cancer, and cardiovascular conditions.
