Operation Secure Shred
Residents are invited to save the date and begin collecting materials a free document-shredding event to be held in Franklin Township on Saturday, September 6, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Shredding will take place at the Franklin Township Municipal Complex, 475 DeMott Lane, Somerset, 08873-7700, rain or shine. Directions to the complex can be found on the Franklin Township website at www.franklintwpnj.org/directions.html.
Documents will be commercially shredded safely, privately and properly by trained, licensed and bonded document-destruction specialists. Staples and paperclips do not have to be removed. Residents may bring documents in any type of container, which will be returned after papers have been dumped. Residents may stay and watch the process.
In order to facilitate processing, additional collection bins will be on site and a new, express drop-off will be available for small loads. Shredding will continue throughout the scheduled hours or until the truck is filled.
“Properly disposing of personal documents is a necessary step in safeguarding and protecting your personal information and credit and preventing identify theft,” said Freeholder Peter S. Palmer, consumer protection liaison. “We are pleased to offer this service a third time this year and also assist in providing shredding events in several municipalities.”
With assistance from the Somerset County Consumer Protection Office and the County’s Records Management Office, additional 2013 shredding events will be held throughout other Somerset County municipalities. “Operation Secure Shred” events are sponsored by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders and are a courtesy of the Somerset County Division of Consumer Protection.
According to 2009 Federal Trade Commission (FTC) statistics, identity theft affects as many as 10 million people in the United States annually. This results in losses to financial and business organizations totaling $53 billion per year.
