Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer

POSITION SUMMARY
Under direction and supervision of the Division Captain and Public Safety Director, the position of Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for a variety of duties pertaining to the maintenance of public safety within Franklin Township.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Serves as a representative of Franklin Township, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with employees and the public.
• Serves as in-house personnel to Community Relations Bureau when officers are detailed out of the building.
• Serves as Courtroom Security.
• Participates in Township Sponsored Community Events (i.e. 4th of July Celebration, Franklin Day Festival, Week of the People, National Night Out, etc.)
• Assists Community Relations Bureau with positive community engagement activities.
• Assists with the transport and maintenance of police vehicles, specialized equipment and supplies.
• Assists with prisoner transport.
• Assists with traffic duties such as maintaining tow log, calibrating speed radar tools, etc.
• Provides coverage for School Crossing Guards due to vacancies or absences.
• Other related duties as assigned or required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language proficiently.
• Must possess good moral character.
• Must be highly motivated.
• Ability to work well with others in a collaborative team setting as well as the ability to effectively function individually.
• Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to follow orders and make sound decisions.
• Ability to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and General Orders of the Department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• Must possess high school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Two years of relevant experience a plus.
• Any combination of education and experience.

License/Certification:

• Valid NJ driver’s license required.
• Current NJ PTC Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer certification required.

Special Qualifications:
• Must be a United States citizen.
• Must be a resident of New Jersey.
• Retired Police Officers who separated from prior service in good standing, who are less than 65 years of age and who satisfy the other requirements of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146 may apply.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
• Police car, police radio, handgun and other weapons as required, side handle baton, handcuffs, first aid equipment, computer.

• Work is primarily performed in an indoor environment, but incumbents may occasionally be required to work in the field.
• The employee is occasionally exposed to hazardous conditions.
• The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and extreme heat.
• The noise level in the work environment ranges from moderately quiet to loud.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand and walk; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
• The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
• The employee is frequently required to lift between 25 and 50 pounds and is occasionally required to lift over 100 pounds.
